A Stranger at Midnight

That night, Sammy was in a deep sleep. Chelsea’s aunt and uncle had gone all-out on an expensive and comfortable bed, and when topped with her own flannel sheets she was wrapped in a cocoon of warmth. But something woke her up.

She dragged her eyelids open, felt the heavy weight of them, and closed them once again. Sammy rolled over and pulled the covers a little further up, snuggling deep under them. But the noise that had awoken her in the first place sounded again, and the next thing she knew she was sitting up in bed.

Twisting around in bed, Sammy parted the curtains that covered the window at the head of the bed. The neighbors house was lit up like a beacon in the night, yellow squares of light escaping from every window. Sammy frowned. This was happening every night. She didn’t think much of it at first, but she was noticing a pattern.

Almost every night, her neighbor had all his lights on around eleven. The houses were far enough apart that she couldn’t hear any activity on the other side of the fence until midnight, when the man headed out his front door and slammed it behind him. Every night, this had woken Sammy up so that she could see the man head down his sidewalk and off into the night, wrapped to the gills.

Irritated and sleepy, Sammy turned on the lamp next to the bed. She padded down the hall and out into the living room, just to make sure the front door was locked. It was.

She knew she shouldn’t be worried about what her neighbors did. She hadn’t even bothered going around and introducing herself, since she knew she’d only be staying here for a week or two. But the activity next door bothered her on a deep level.

When she returned to the bedroom, she switched off the lamp and made sure the curtains were completely closed before crawling back under the covers. She shut her eyes, determined to get back to sleep even though she knew the neighbor’s door would wake her up once again when he returned home in an hour.
